Roblox launches its first generative AI game creation tools

Roblox has introduced a generative AI conversational assistant to streamline virtual world creation on the popular platform. The new Roblox Assistant, revealed at the 2023 Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), is tailored to Roblox’s workflows, lingo, and data and builds on the generative AI tools launched by Roblox earlier this year. Another tool uses AI to moderate voice conversations in real time, which could cut down on toxicity on the platform. The company started testing this tool in August and “will be deploying the English model shortly, with another four languages by the end of the year,” according to spokesperson Roman Skuratovskiy.

At this year’s Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), we announced several new tools that will bring generative AI into Roblox Studio and beyond to help anyone on Roblox scale faster, iterate more quickly, and augment their skills to create even better content. Generative AI is the technology to create new content by utilizing existing text, audio files, or images. With generative AI, computers detect the underlying pattern related to the input and produce similar content. This is in contrast to most other AI techniques where the AI model attempts to solve a problem which has a single answer (e.g. a classification or prediction problem). At its annual developer conference, the company recently announced its plans to offer avatar-based voice calls, as part of its broader initiative to cater to users 17 and up.

While this system does have the ability to detect specific keywords such as profanity, policy violations are rarely just one word. One word can often seem problematic in one context and just fine in a different context. Essentially, these types of violations involve what you’re saying, how you’re saying it, and the context in which the statements are made.

Two New Roblox AI Tools Launched

The addition comes at a time when Roblox’s user base is aging up and the company is looking to cater to its slightly older demographic with new experiences. Bronstein said the subscriptions tools will give developers a way to generate recurring revenue from their biggest fans, who they can entice with items like a new virtual shirt every week. When customers use the currency to buy virtual items within games, Roblox shares 30% of the revenue with the game developer.
